Dear everyone,

Greetings from Saheli Trust. Do forgive us for the delay in this month's newsletter but we have been on our toes for last few days giving us little time to sit down and work on our laptops.
Street Play by Saheli on Domestic Violence
Our girls presented a street play on Domestic Violence in the New Khala Goan. Written and directed by two volunteers from Delhi, Aishwarya & Sakshi, the play dealt with issues like acid attacks and gender discrimination besides Domestic Violence. It was wonderful to see villagers, especially the young boys, watching the play intently.
A talk on Gender sensitization and women's rights was held in Government Girl's Inter college in the last week of August. Over 60 girls attended the session and had a number of questions to ask. The sad part which came out of the talk was the realization that girls / women still consider themselves inferior to men.
Read our Annual Report for 2014
On the 16th of August we received information that a girl was being held as bonded labor in a house in posh colony, Dehradun. With the help of local police and child helpline the girl was rescued. It turned out that the 15 year old girl was working in the house as domestic help from the age of 5 years and had never ventured out of the house over all these years. She was routinely beaten up and for the last 2 months was being sexually abused. For all her work, her mother, who stays in a village around 100 kms from Dehradun, received Rs 250/- per month.

She confided in another woman who used to visit the house who in turn rang up our Women's Helpline. The first ten days or so, the girl, who we will not name at present, wept profusely, barely ate anything and was generally in a state of shock. Gradually she is now regaining her composure and hopefully we will take care of her. The sad part is the girl cannot even read basic alphabets and she is 15.

We desperately need a sponsor for her. If you'd like to help us help her, please reply to this email or call me. We would need a contribution of Rs 3000/- per month for her. Please do stand up and help.
Message from the Secretary
Greetings from Saheli,

Literally each month over the last few months we've been coming across girls abused and beaten for years and this month was no exception. For 10 long years one girl worked day and night in a house, was starved, beaten, sexually abused and never taken out of the home. I shudder to think how i would react, if i was in her place. Since we got her, we've been really working hard to reduce her pain.

We are also trying to start free classes for adolescents, training them as customer care executives and sales executives. The plan is in it's early stages and hopefully by next month we should be starting the classes.

A request i would like to make to everyone is to please forward this email to your friends and relatives, so that they could be aware of our work. More the people involved, more encouragement and ideas will we get and things would only get better. So, please do forward our newsletters to those in your address book.

Also I would like to appeal to everyone is to help us out with donations. You can "adopt" a child for Rs 3000/- per month, for as long as you like. You can stop the donations as and when you wish, no questions asked. This amount of Rs 3000/- includes Rs 800/- for studies, Rs 2000/- for food and Rs 200/- towards personal expenses. Details of ways to donate are here:

Please remember, each rupee counts and please don't think that there are many "others" who will help us. Do help us yourself too. We now have 80G, so you get tax benefit too.

And finally, a big request to everyone is to please help us grow by giving us advice on the way forwards, by pointing out our mistakes and by suggesting new ideas to us. Please do not hesitate in criticizing anything you don't like. All you need to do is to reply to this newsletter. And if you live in Dehradun, or if you ever visit our city, my earnest appeal to you is to visit us. Do call me and I shall be honored to arrange a visit for you. My number is +91-9760371958.

With regards,

Shruti Kaushik,
Secretary, Saheli
