The pictures above are of two separate rooftop English and Hindi classes at Park Road, Kanwli Basti on the outskirts of Dehradun. The women from two nearby localities are not even allowed to come at one place and study, their family says it is "too far" !!! So, we decided to conduct two seperate classes for them to attend.
It is really amazing to see the enthusiasm of these women. They want to hold a book and a pencil and learn what they were not allowed to when they were children. They steal this time from their families and children and other household chores and come here willingly so that people call them LITERATE.

Conducted an interactive session on women's right and importance of education with the girls of Rajkiye Balika Inter College, Bhrampuri, an urban slum area.

The girls in our E@YD comes from a relatively lower economic background. On asking why do you start school so late? One of them replied: "Women are not allowed to go out of the house much. When you started the classes, my father gave me permission to come. I want to learn English"
These classes are of utmost importance for them. They hardly skip any classes and are very keen to learn whatever is being taught to them.
Since 2013 when Saheli began, at least thrice in a month we have to go from door to door urging mothers not to keep the children from attending school. Not only children, here we have to educate and counsel the family too for delaying the marraigeable age, for them it is just 15.

This young woman in the picture came to us with her 6 year old daughter three years back in search of a place where she could stay and work. In these last two years, she has become so confident and aspiring. She is now in class 12 and has been working hard. Apart from studies she along with other children of the residence are enrolled in various extra curricular activities like Kathak(folk dance of north India), casio, guitar, Indian classical music and also Karate.
She has completed her Diploma in Kathak and is now pariticipating in various competetions at school level.

We participated in a candle march for child protection held on 14 November, which is celebrated as Children's Day in India.
Together we marched for children with children with one of our sister organization.

Got an opportunity to meet Professor Rajmohan Gandhi, Gandhiji's grandson in an event organized for specially challenged individuals. We feel blessed to listen to such a learned man.
|

After having been spending a great deal of time searching for a bolster for Mishty, we finally got one from Chennai after repeated calls and requests to them.
Mishty is a very sweet and adorable child diagnosed with cerebral palsy.
