Dear Everyone,

2018 is a very special year for us, as Saheli completes 5 years of it's existence. We celebrated the day with gratitude and humility, thanking God that we were able to achieve what we could in this short span. We also would like to thank each and everyone who is reading this newsletter, as without your support, we would not have been able to achieve anything at all. Your support has been invaluable, in whatever form it was.
5 years & counting....
It was a bright sunny winter afternoon when over 200 people gathered to mark 5 years of Saheli. A large number of girls, whom we teach in our Education@YourDoorstep program also turned up, dressed in fine attire. Given that they are not allowed to leave their villages, them attending our celebrations in the heart of Dehradun, is itself a big achievement.

A variety of dances, songs and skits were performed by the children and staff of Saheli, all of which received loud applause from the audience. Our Secretary, Ms Shruti Kaushik and the President, Ms Manju Kaushik, delivered inspiring speeches.

The Chief Guest on the occasion was Mr Madan Kauhik, Minister in Uttarakhand Government. He lauded the efforts of Saheli Trust and called upon everyone present to follow the footsteps of Saheli. Among the Guest of Honors were Mr. Sunil Unniyal Gamma & Mr Puneet Mittal.

A stall of Child Helpline at the venue gave information to the visitors about the National Child Helpline 1098 and a stall of Youth For Human Rights India, spread the message of Human Rights.
Our Education@YourDoorstep Campaign
Our Education@YourDoorstep Campaign continues with full vigor. Two new batches of 20 girls each were started, while two batches concluded. As you may know, in this program we teach rural girls Basic Computers & Spoken English. These girls are denied education simply because there is no school in their village and they are not allowed to venture out of their village. So far, since the program started, we have taught 280 girls and we do feel that we have made them more self confident.
Outreach Program
Outreach meeting in January took us to Gulab Basti on the outskirts of Dehradun. The colony is quite remote, accessible via a narrow unpaved road and we were the first group to actually reach there. The women were very receptive and wanted to earn their livelihoods but the inaccessible location made that difficult. During the meeting we met two women who were suffering from Domestic Violence and we will be following them up closely.
This month we are happy to share with you, that our Self Defense Classes for village girls started in January in a village called Aazad Colony. Situated about 5 kms away from Dehradun, the girls are not allowed to venture out of their village, not even to an open ground right next to the village. So, we started to teach 9 girls Self Defense on a rooftop. The enthusiasm of the girls is incredible and we will share how it progresses in our next newsletter.
Message from the Secretary
Dear Everyone,

January has been a month we will always remember. So much happened in this period. We celebrated the completion of 5 years and also, in a way, laid down what we will do in the next few years.

Starting a cab service for women, has been on our agenda for a long time now. We finally have found 4 girls who are willing to work as professional drivers and we are now trying to give our project a definitive shape. Numerous hurdles have crept up and we are sure that with your blessing and help, we will overcome them all sooner rather than later.

Also, I would like to request everyone to please spread the word about us. If you feel our work is good, please tell your friends and acquaintances about us. The more people know about us, the more likely are we to get support. So, I would like to request you to please forward this newsletter to such people.

Finally, as I always say, we would love to have your feedback, both negative and positive, because that is what helps us grow. Please do not hesitate to comment, all you need to do is to reply to this email. Your words mean a lot to us, so please don't hesitate.

And the invitation to visit our shelter is there for everyone. Please do spare some time and come and feel the spirit of Saheli.

With regards,

Shruti Kaushik,
Secretary, Saheli

...and in the end...
