Dear Everyone,

Happy New Year to you all. I hope you celebrated the start of 2020 in good spirits with family and friends. Now that we’re a few days into the new year, it’s good to look ahead and think about what this year may bring us. But first, a quick look back.
2019 was a year that exceeded all our expectations. We were able to help 15 women survivors of Domestic Violence, did 47 village surveys which included in total of 2663 houses. Total number of community meetings were 24 which benefitted 365 people. There were 26 batches of Education@YourDoorstep classes in which 375 students were taught basic English, Computers and basic Hindi which made a total of 68 batches and 1,045 students who were benefitted from our classes. It is reason for celebration and gratitude.
A big thank you to all of you, who helped promote our work and spread the word about our work. We also need to thank all of our volunteers, our supporters, all of without whom none of our efforts would be possible.

The above pictures are of two villages (Park Road, Kanwali Basti and of Lohiya nagar) which are situated on the outskikrts of Dehradun, Uttarakhand.
In the year 2019, 26 batches of Education@YourDoorstep classes in which 375 students were taught basic English, Computers and basic Hindi which made a total of 68 batches and 1,045 students who are benefitted from our classes tillt date.
With immense pressure from the students to conduct classes for a longer period of time, we are planning to conduct it for a longer duration (probably 6 months) at one place for spending more time on quality of education given. We have to locate areas where majority of women and girls from the nearby locality can come and attend the classes easily. We will be taking a bigger room on rent to make a proper class and give them a feel of mainstream education, which will leave just a narrow gap between our classes and the mainstream schools and colleges.
OUTREACH
Rooftop meeting on the outskirts of Dehradun to motivate women to take up driving as the profession. Even though the ladies agreed to what we said, breaking the glass ceiling is a tough task.
Saheli Residence
Our children actively  participated in the Annual Day function of their school, Himalayan Academy, held on 24th December 2019 and received appreciation from their teachers for their performances.
Hello !
Dear Everyone,

I hope this email finds you well.

Wishing everyone out there a safe, prosperous and Happy New Year.

2019 will always be a year for all of us at Saheli Trust. We’ve been through many ups and downs this year, but in the end, we achieved what we set out to do.

Some of the girls living in Saheli Residence, started college this year, while a few stepped into the professional world. Our Education@YourDoorstep project, which as you know involves teaching women and girls in their own villages,  gave us the satisfaction of making literate 1,045 students this year, which is a very satisfying. Of course, there’s still a lot of work ahead.

In 2019 we took significant steps towards women empowerment and to strengthen women financially through it, in the form of SheCab & SheTravels, but we have been finding a hard time in finding more women to take driving as their profession. It’s no secret that in a country like India, breaking the stereotypes is a difficult task. Let us keep our fingers crossed and hope to find more drivers for SheCab. While we have initiated steps to reduce expenses and increase revenues, we are limited by the lack of fresh recruits for driving and the limited hours each driver can put in because of their family commitments. Women always put family first, which is good and probably natural, but it limits the services we can provide.

In short, the current circumstances are all quite challenging to work in. But no matter what the circumstances are, we must not lose sight of our priority: to be strong and to reach out to the ones who need us the most !

It’s important for us to use our time wisely and move forward as decisively and swiftly as we can in 2020. That will only be possible with your continued love and support, since we are a team and we have to work together very hard to make this world a happy and better place for each and every one of us. While we’ve successfully managed to do so many things together, we need to continue to work together since there are a lot of people out there who need us.

The past few years have had a significant impact on all of us, but I would like to thank you all for your significant support and dedication during these challenging times. I would also like to invite you all to be be an active part of  Saheli family by giving us advice and critically analyzing our work. The year ahead will bring its own challenges but I’m sure by working together and keeping focussed on our work, we can realise our common vision of creating a happy world.

Regards,

Shruti Kaushik,
Secretary,
Saheli Trust
